Who We Are

Our History

In 1981, residents of Taman Meruya Ilir (TMII)—located in Meruya Urban Village, Kembangan District (then part of Kebon Jeruk District), West Jakarta—began making efforts to secure a mosque for their neighborhood. These efforts involved forming a committee that subsequently held meetings with relevant authorities from the Jakarta Special Capital Region Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta).

In principle, the Jakarta Provincial Government agreed to provide funding for the mosque's construction, subject to the condition that, upon completion, a legal entity would be established to manage the facility.

To meet this administrative requirement, the committee began preparing the necessary documentation and fulfilling the criteria to establish a legal entity in the form of a foundation.

On December 16, 1983, the Al-Ikhwan Meruya Foundation—subsequently known as YAIM (and initially named Yayasan Al-Ikhwan or YAI)—was established via a notarial deed executed by Notary Sita Susikto, SH. H. Indra Setiawan was authorized to act on behalf of the 34 other founding board members.

Having satisfied the legal entity requirement, H. Indra Setiawan and H. Zainal Asikin—serving as YAIM’s first General Chairman and General Secretary, respectively—sent a letter on December 20, 1983, to the Governor of Jakarta requesting assistance for the mosque's construction.

The letter cited the growing number of residents in the TMII complex as the reason for needing an adequate place of worship. Additionally, a plot of land designated for a place of worship had already been secured from the developer, PT Labrata; this site was located at Block F1, Taman Meruya Ilir, West Jakarta.

Ultimately, the effort to build the mosque succeeded. Nearly two years later, on May 24, 1985, the construction of the Al-Ikhwan Mosque was completed, and the building was officially inaugurated by the Deputy Governor of Jakarta, H. Edy Nalapraya.
